This may very well be one of those observations that is so glaring obvious that many of us forget about it. Your local public library is the most incredible resource for a gardener. I am fortunate to live in Fairfield County, CT where there are at least six major public libraries within a 20 minute drive of my home – if I added all the satellite branches and book mobiles that number would be closer to twenty.
Why am I such an advocate for public libraries? For one simple reason, I LOVE gardening books but they can be very pricey. So I use the local library as a way to preview a gardening or landscape design book before I decide to invest my money in it. It is a rare occurance that I hear or read about a gardening book and I cannot find it at a local library. The main branch of the Ferguson Library here in Stamford has over 800 volumes in it’s gardening collection. And the Greenwich Library in Greenwich, CT has over 1,500 titles in it’s collection! And of course, if I decide to utilize the inter-library loan system I have access to books all over the state.
Whether you want to learn more about the history of landscaping, see photos of famous gardens, check out gardening styles, research plants for patio gardening, or get inspiration for a unique design element for a new patio or terrace, your local library has a book for you. If you haven’t been to your local library in a while make some time this week to go there and check out the gardening section. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the free resources that will be waiting for you. And you know what that means - you’ll have more money to buy plants!
