I thought I’d share this short article I wrote for a quarterly newsletter published by Stamford realtor Joyce Cebo on how making an investment in landscaping can actually save you money in the long run. Think about it – what other home improvement actually increases in value as it ages – certainly not that new kitchen!
While landscaping contributes to the aesthetic value of your property, trees in particular can add significantly to its appraised value. Studies by The Council of Tree and Landscape Appraisers estimate that a mature tree can account for up to 15% of the value of a residential property. Planting trees can also help you save on your current energy costs.

Wouldn't You Pay More For The House That Comes With this Tree?
Did you know the second most popular home improvement is outdoor landscaping? Many homeowners get enjoyment from spending a few hours in their gardens on weekend but they may not realize landscaping can also add to the value of their home. According to Money Magazine, a professionally designed landscape can raise property values by as much as 30%. The recovery value of money spent on professional landscaping is at least 100% and can be as high as 200%.
Trees can reduce utility costs if planted in the proper location. To take advantage of the sun’s heat during the winter, plant a deciduous tree (a tree that loses all its leaves each fall) on the south and west-facing sides of your home. In the summer, the tree’s leafy canopy will also shade your house, helping to keep it cooler and reducing your air-conditioning costs. You can also plant evergreen trees on the north or northwest side of your home to act as a windbreak. This can prevent winter winds from robbing your home of its heat.
Make sure you do not plant in an area where the tree will impact existing utility lines. Also keep in mind the mature size of the tree. A 5’ tall tree can look harmless in the garden center but it may grow into a 60’ specimen that could ultimately give you trouble. Check with your local nursery or professional landscape designer if you need help choosing the right tree for your property.
