It’s the first of the month and so that means it’s time to share another garden OOPs moment or GOOPs. GOOPs is the brainchild of Joene Hendy, a garden blogger, master gardener and fellow CT-based garden coach. Joene’s idea is that we all make mistakes in our gardens so why not share them and learn from each other. And besides, a lot of times they are just plain funny.
Here’s my GOOPs for July…years ago, soon after we moved into our current home, my husband was obsessed with having the perfect lawn. (I am happy to say I have slowly cured him of his lawn addiction but back then it was a serious problem!) The lawn we’d inherited from the previous owners of our house was OK – it was green, but the blades of grass were mixed with lots of weeds and that was not what my husband had in mind for our new lawn.
So the two of us spent hours one beautiful mid-April weekend prepping the lawn for an application of new grass seed. We dug out patches of weeds, raked and aerated portions of the yard, added new top soil and finally reseeded the entire lawn area. We went to bed that night exhausted but filled with idyllic visions of playing with our son on our beautiful new grass.

Timing is Everything
When we awoke in the morning, this is what we saw…only much more of it. During the night, it had snowed about 2″. Our new grass seed was laying frozen under a blanket of snow. Turns out we were in a freak cold snap and the snow stayed around for a few days. Instead of playing on the new lawn with our son we played in the snow that day. All these years later, we still laugh about the time it snowed in April right after we reseeded the entire lawn. Sometimes in gardening, as in life, timing is everything!
