Winter officially begins tomorrow, December 21st, but yesterday Mother Nature gave us an early taste of what’s to come. Here in Stamford, CT, we got off pretty easy with only 5″ of snow from the massive storm that dumped three to four times that amount in other parts of the state. I was out taking pictures of my winter garden this morning and I was struck by the stark contrast I have documented in photos over the course of the year. So I thought I’d share a few of them with you…

This photo was taken in August, just after the bed was widened a bit. In the spring, the Leucothoe will be moved out about 3' so their roots don't compete so heavily with the roots of the hemlocks and yew overhead.

Even thought the snow helps to accentuate the horizontal branches of this doublefile viburnum, it's hard to believe this is the same collection of shrubs captured below.
For me, one of the best things about winter is that it reminds me of the beauty of my garden at other times of the year. And of course I get to rest up for the all the spring garden chores ahead.
Happy Winter!
