Toad Cottages & Shooting Stars: Grandma’s Bag of Tricks by Sharon Lovejoy is not the typical garden book that I normally review. But, I received a review copy and enjoyed flipping through it so I’d thought I’d share it with you.
This book is part garden craft book, part psychology book and part cook book. While some of the garden-related crafts are a bit humdrum – making your own bubbles, making pine cone bird feeders or leaf rubbings - others are a bit more interesting. The underwater viewer (see pg. 57) and the section on how different animal’s eyes look at night when a light is shined on them (see pgs. 60 – 63) are inspired.
Lovejoy also discusses kid-friendly veggies and ways to make your garden more critter friendly. There’s a section on rainy day activities and also ‘Mother Nature’s Toy Chest’ where she has illustrations of and directions on how to make simple toys from items found in your backyard.
So if you have some little gardeners in your life and are looking for some ideas on how to amuse them, check out Toad Cottages & Shooting Stars, you won’t be disappointed.
Note: This book was provided to me by the publisher, Workman Publishing, for the express purpose of reviewing it.
