Choosing ornamental trees for your garden can be an overwhelming decision. Since most homeowners have room for only one or two small trees, choosing trees is something most of us don’t do very often. Even small trees can set the tone for your garden and should be viewed as permanent fixtures that add year round structure and interest to your garden. So making the right choice is crucial.

tried to leave a comment over on Patch, but not sure it took. Anyway, my favorite small tree at the moment is Enkianthus companulatus ‘Red Bells’, but I am fickle
Ricki, When it comes to plant loves I think we’re all fickle:) Enkianthus companulatus is a fantastic shrub, the flowers are so delicate and the fall color is fantastic.
Why recommend potentially invasive Chinese paperbark maple for CT? What’s wrong with our dozens of great natives like serviceberry and witchhazel?
Hi Sue, I’m not sure what you mean by ‘potentially invasive’? A. griseum is not on the CT list of invasive or potentially invaise plants, nor to my knowledge is it on a similair list in any of the other NE states. I do not subscribe to the notion that any non-native plants MAY one day become invasive and therefore should not be planted in our gardens. But I know some people do.
I stand by my recommendation of A. griseum as a worthwhile addition to a CT garden. It has so much to offer and, in my humble opinion, is an underused gem. In a 500-word column that highlighted only three trees, I think drawing readers attention to 2 native trees is not bad!
Thanks for leaving your comment and suggesting two other great options for shady CT gardens. And I’m always happy to hear a dissenting opinion.
