I got lucky with my purple smoke bush and it smoked like the dickens the first year. It’s not very purple though! I’m trying to get hold of an American smoke tree Cotinus obovatus just for the heck of it.
Karyl, Sounds like we have opposite plants…mine doesn’t smoke but the leaves stay a wonderful shade of purple all season long. My in-laws have an American smoke tree in their garden (zone 6) and it’s very understated. I think you’d have to site it perfectly so it could really be appreciated.
Color is rich and the smoky plumes soften it so nicely.
